What You Will Learn
Mandatory Units

- Shampoo and condition hair
- Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas
- Assist with hair colour services
Option Units
- Assist with salon reception duties
- Assist with perming hair services
- Assist with perming hair and relaxing services
- Assist with perming hair and relaxing services for African Caribbean hair

Depends on training provider/college but generally takes 1 year
Requirements For Course
Depends on training provider/college but generally requirements are at least 2 GCSE’s at grade E.
How You’re Assessed
There is no final examination but you will be continuously assessed using a range of methods; observation of practical work, oral questions, assignments, written tests and portfolio evidence to demonstrate understanding.
Qualification And Future Prospects
Qualification – NVQ level 1 hairdressing
Future Prospects – A junior position in the industry and/or Level 2 NVQ in Hairdressing/Barbering

NVQ Level 2 – Hairdressing
What You Will Learn
Mandatory Units
- Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
- Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
- Advise and consult with clients
- Cut hair using basic techniques
- Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
- Style, dress and finish hair using basic techniques
- Change hair colour using basic techniques
Option Units
- Fulfil salon reception duties
- Promote additional products or services to clients
- Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
- Style hair using basic plaiting techniques and added hair
- Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques
- Perm, relax and neutralise hair
- Perm, relax and neutralise African Caribbean hair
- Provide scalp massage services

Requirements For Course
Depends on training provider/college but generally requirements are at least 2 GCSE’s at grade D or an equivalent Level 1 qualification or already be working in a salon.
How You’re Assessed
Practical performance, assignments, written and oral questions are included in the assessment strategy. Candidates will also produce a portfolio containing evidence of competent assessment as required by the awarding body.
Qualification And Future Prospects
Qualification – NVQ level 2 hairdressing
Future Prospects – On completion of your NVQ Level II you can begin to work towards your NVQ Level III. There are many career opportunities within hairdressing such as salons, spas, hotels and cruise ships.

- Perm hair using a variety of techniques
- Colour hair using a variety of techniques
- Provide corrective relaxing services
- Style hair using thermal techniques
- Create complex styles using African Caribbean styling techniques
- Style hair using locksing techniques
- Provide Indian Head Massage treatment
- Support customer service improvements
- Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities

Requirements For Course
Depends on training provider/college but generally requirements are NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or relevant industrial experience.
How You’re Assessed
Assessment is through direct observation of skills through assignments, completion of exams and a portfolio
Qualification And Future Prospects
Qualification – NVQ level 3 hairdressing
Future Prospects – NVQ Level 4 in salon management. It is also possible to work as a senior stylist within a salon environment, a technical advisor or sales representative for product companies.
